Description
Gnarled Utah Juniper at Monument Valley. Monument Valley is a Navaho Tribal Park located near Keyanta, Arizona. Tribal parks located in the Navaho Nation are the equivalent of National Parks in the United States. Monument Valley is a unique collection of Mesas formed from Navaho Sandstone, a landscape so familiar to Western movies and Road Runner cartoons that when one first approaches one has a clear vision of having been here many times before. So many iconic landscape images of this park have been made it is clearly the job of any photographer/artist to find images that are both representative of this wonderful place and unique to the place at the same time. This image of the gnarled Utah juniper with Totem Pole and Yei Bi Chei formations in the distance is one such image.

I processed the raw image file using texture layers to enhance the sky, an added border from ON1, some vignetting using the PhotoShop Camera Raw filter and Topaz Labs DeJPEG 4 filter to produce this texture blended image.

Love having that beautiful old juniper for foreground interest - it has so much character. And the orange terrain and near butte plus the red rock formations behind it complement the intense blue Southwest sky perfectly.
