Description
I photographed the macro image of these cholla spines using a 28-105mm lens set to 105mm in order to create a bit of compression highlighting only the spines I was interested in visually. Cholla spines are quite painful when one is stuck by one or more, the latter is more likely. Not only do the spines have a series of one-way barbs which tend to hold the spines in place making removal a slow process but the spines themselves produce a mild acid which is quite painful. I speak from experience here. While quite impossible when stuck, the cholla is a beautiful cactus often growing in bunches across the Sonoran Desert and elsewhere. Many people are enraptured by their pleasing appearance and surprised when stuck by one of the elements breaking off, lying on the ground.
