Description
Niagara Falls, Ontario, is a Canadian city at the famous waterfalls of the same name, linked with the U.S. by the Rainbow Bridge. Its site on the Niagara River's western shore overlooks the Horseshoe Falls, the cascades' most expansive section.
The verdant green color of the water flowing over the Niagara Falls is a byproduct of the estimated 60 tons/minute of dissolved salts and "rock flour" (very finely ground rock) generated by the erosive force of the Niagara River itself. The current rate of erosion is approximately 1 foot (0.30m) per year, down from a historical average of 3 feet (0.91m) per year.
I photographed the falls from a high perch on the patio of one of the gift shop restaurants. The restaurant opened at Noon; it was still before 10:00 AM giving me free reign of the patio. From this vantage point some of the debris from the natural erosion of the falls stuck its head above the everpresent mist. Using an 18-105 mm lens set at 70 mm at 0.5 sec exposure (the camera was on a tripod and I used a ND filter set to about 5) one is able to see the pointed end of the rocks released by these powerful falls as they work their way back to Lake Erie creating the Niagara Gorge. Onlookers may also be seen at the railing on Goat Island on the US side of the falls observing this magnificent waterfall. It seems to me that there are two people trying to climb the fence on Goat Island to the right of the larger grouping; candidates for the Darwin Award.
